Low rues missed chances

Germany coach Joachim Low has insisted that his side deserved more than a draw for their efforts against Italy last night, bemoaning a combination of bad luck and missed chances.

Mats Hummels gave Germany the lead inside inside eight minutes but it was an advantage they could not preserve, with Ignazio Abate's equaliser proving enough to earn the Azzurri a 1-1 draw on home soil.

Low watched Andre Schurrle, Sami Khedira and Benedikt Howedes all strike the upright at the San Siro and believes that on another night Germany would have left Milan worthy winners.

He told reporters at his post-match press conference: "We expected an intense and aggressive game, which proved to be the case.

"We did well in defence against Mario Balotelli and Pablo Osvaldo, but it was also a positive performance in attack.

"We dominated the midfield and had many scoring opportunities, even hitting the upright at the last second. We hit the woodwork three times, which I think has to be a record for a friendly. It's a shame."

The stalemate ensured Germany continued a wretched record against Italy, with their last victory over an Azzurri side coming in 1995.
