FIFA wants ex-German FA president Wolfgang Niersbach to be banned for two years

FIFA wants ex-German FA president banned

Former German FA president Wolfgang Niersbach is facing a two-year ban from all football activity following his role in the 2006 World Cup-bidding process.

Niersbach is accused of bribery following allegations that a £4.9m sum was paid to FIFA in order to secure votes for Germany to host the tournament 10 years ago.

Last November, the 67-year-old stepped down from his position within the German FA amid the allegations, which are being investigated.

Today, FIFA's independent ethics committee recommended that Niersbach be given a two-year ban after receiving a report from ethics chief Dr Cornel Borbely.

At the time of his resignation, Niersbach admitted to taking "political responsibility" but denied any wrongdoing.
