Franz Beckenbauer 'investigated by Swiss authorities over 2006 World Cup'

The Swiss Attorney General's Office is reportedly investigating Franz Beckenbauer in relation to Germany's bidding process for the 2006 World Cup.

German football legend Franz Beckenbauer is reportedly being investigated by the Swiss Attorney General's office in relation to alleged corruption surrounding the 2006 World Cup in his homeland.

FIFA opened an investigation in March, focusing on six men involved in helping Germany secure the rights to host the global football tournament.

Beckenbauer, who was the head of the tournament's organising committee, admitted that he made a "mistake" during the bidding process, but denied allegations that a payment was made to FIFA in exchange for votes.

According to BBC News, Swiss prosecutors have launched their own investigation into the matter.

The 70-year-old was hit with a fine and a warning from FIFA after "failing to co-operate" with the world governing body's probe into how the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were awarded to Russia and Qatar respectively.
