Fulham injury news: Marco Silva provides Ryan Sessegnon latest as trio head off to AFCON ahead of EFL Cup quarter-final clash

Fulham manager Marco Silva has admitted that he is unable to provide an exact timeline on Ryan Sessegnon's injury recovery.

The Cottagers are turning their focus to the EFL Cup after recording a 3-2 Premier League victory over Burnley at the weekend.

Fulham will head into their last-eight tie against Newcastle with the clear objective of reaching the semi-final stage for the second time in three seasons.

However, they will enter Wednesday's fixture without five players, including Rodrigo Muniz and Sessegnon due to hamstring injuries. 

Muniz has been out of action since November 8, while Sessegnon has missed the last two Premier League matches.

Silva delivers Sessegnon injury update

Silva is hopeful that Sessegnon will not be out too long, although he is unable to offer an exact timeframe for his return to action. 

"You have to be careful with him," Silva told reporters. "He's already running on the pitch and doing individual work.

"He's not going to be long, I don't think, but maybe a couple of weeks. I cannot give you a timescale because we need to see how he reacts again."

The impact of Sessegnon's absence has at least been softened by the return of first-choice left-back Antonee Robinson. 

He played the full duration of Saturday's win over Burnley in his first appearance since the end of September.

Silva rues lack of transfer business as three players depart for AFCON

In addition to Muniz and Sessegnon, Fulham will be unable to call upon Calvin Bassey, Samuel Chukwueze and Alex Iwobi for the EFL Cup quarter-final.

The Nigerian trio will be unavailable for the foreseeable future after heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. 

Silva has rued the club's failure to prepare the squad for their departures, pointing the finger at the lack of transfer activity in the summer window.

“If you lose three players, it's tough, but we knew that from last July,” Silva said as per The Standard. 

“When we signed Chukwueze, we knew it, we should have been prepared for that situation. We have to face the competition with the players we have."

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich loanee Jonah Kusi-Asare is in contention to return to the matchday squad after sitting out the win over Burnley.
