Raphael Varane hails France's "fantastic" performance during Friday's 5-2 win over Switzerland at the World Cup.

France defender Raphael Varane has hailed the team's "fantastic" performance during Friday's win over Switzerland at the World Cup.

Les Bleus all but secured a place in the second round of the tournament thanks to a comfortable 5-2 victory in Salvador.

The French finish their Group E campaign on Wednesday against Ecuador in Rio de Janeiro.

"It was a fantastic performance," Varane, who plays his club football for Real Madrid, told FIFA.com. "We put them under a lot of pressure and played with a lot of intensity."

France failed to get out of the group stage at the 2010 World Cup as two defeats and a draw saw them finish bottom of their group.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud celebrates scoring for France against Norway on May 27, 2014.
