Arsene Wenger tips France to be the surprise package at this summer's European Championships.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has backed France to confound their critics in the upcoming European Championships.

France meet England in their opening match on June 11 hoping to banish the memories of a disastrous 2010 World Cup campaign that saw the squad rebel and the side finish bottom of their group.

However, Wenger believes that Les Bleus have the players to win the tournament, providing they are confident enough.

"France has the players to win this tournament but they have not got the confidence and have no certainty," said Wenger.

"South Africa is still inside the team a little bit. Expectation levels in France are low because the scars are still there, but they have the quality. They have [Karim] Benzema, [Franck] Ribery, [Samir] Nasri.

"If they can gel well and they can be psychologically comfortable, they can be a surprise at this tournament."

Wenger recently expressed his belief that England must avoid defeat against France if they want to make it through their group.
