Player Ratings: Everton 3-6 Chelsea

Everton 3-6 Chelsea

Chelsea's perfect start to the Premier League season continued this afternoon as they beat Everton 6-3 in a thrilling match at Goodison Park.

Diego Costa scored twice for the visitors, while Branislav Ivanovic, a Seamus Coleman own goal, Nemanja Matic and Ramires sealed the points for Jose Mourinho's men.

Everton found the back of the net through Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and Samuel Eto'o, but it was not enough for them to get anything from a sensational match.

Here, Sports Mole looks at who impressed during an action-packed 90 minutes.

EVERTON

Goal

Tim Howard: Fortunate not to be sent off after less than 10 minutes for handling outside his area. Conceded six times and, although he couldn't do much about most of them, that is never a good thing for a keeper. Lost his head at one point and was again perhaps lucky not to see red after squaring up to Costa and Azpilicueta. (4/10)

Defence

Seamus Coleman: Superb display from the right-back as he bombed up and down the wing tirelessly. All of Everton's best moments came from that flank, and Coleman was a large part of the reason why. His own goal was very unlucky, and he was his side's best player on the day. Got the assist for Everton's first. (9/10)

Phil Jagielka: Made the wrong decision to step up to try to play Costa offside inside the first minute, allowing Chelsea to take an early lead. Caught out on a few occasions over the 90 minutes. Not his best performance. (5/10)

Sylvain Distin: Better than his defensive partner, but still part of a backline that shipped six goals. Had a goal of his own correctly disallowed for offside. (6/10)

Leighton Baines: Outshone by Coleman on the opposite flank, but still a good display from the left-back. Found it tough at times against Ivanovic, but still managed to set up Eto'o for a debut goal. (7/10)

Midfield

Gareth Barry: Made it tough for the Chelsea midfield at times, particularly in the second half. However, end-to-end matches like this aren't exactly built for holding midfielders. (6/10)

James McCarthy: Similarly to Barry, moved the ball fairly well and contributed to his side's positive play in possession, but was powerless to prevent the flurry of goals. Slack marking let him down on occasions. (6/10)

Kevin Mirallas: Took his goal extremely well, flicking the ball into the far corner to give his side hope at the end of the first half. Also hit the post in the second half, being denied by a fine Courtois stop. A handful all game. (8/10)

Steven Naismith: Continued his brilliant start to the season with a third goal in as many games. Finished it beautifully and looks like a man full of confidence at the moment. (8/10)

Aiden McGeady: Set up Naismith's goal with a fine run inside from midfield, before slipping his pass to the Scot. Other than that, didn't have much of a say on the game. (7/10)

Attack

Romelu Lukaku: Crashed a header against the crossbar and showed glimpses of why Everton paid Chelsea so much for his services. Couldn't get on the scoresheet, but made a fine run off the ball to create space for Naismith's goal. (7/10)

Substitutes

Samuel Eto'o: His script may have ended with Everton winning, but it went partially to plan when he came off the bench to score against his former club on his debut. Very well-taken header, and looked bright during an impressive 20-minute cameo. (8/10)

Muhamed Besic: By contrast, Besic's debut was a nightmare as he gifted Chelsea their sixth goal with his first touch as an Everton player. (5/10)

CHELSEA

Goal

Thibaut Courtois: Could do nothing about any of the goals. Was commanding inside his box once again and made a sensational save to deny Mirallas in the second half. A fine performance, despite conceding three times. (8/10)

Defence

Branislav Ivanovic: Magnificent display both in defence and attack. He scored after just three minutes to make it 2-0 and was solid at the back all afternoon. The best player on the park. (9/10)

John Terry: Made a few trademark blocks and was involved in a ding-dong battle with Lukaku all game, Both of them got the better of each other on separate occasions, but Terry probably just about came out on top overall. (7/10)

Gary Cahill: A typically solid display from Cahill, despite conceding three goals. Not the perfect performance by any means, but he made some important contributions. (7/10)

Cesar Azpilicueta: Struggled against the marauding Coleman all afternoon, with Hazard offering some cover but not as much as the left-back needed. (6/10)

Midfield

Nemanja Matic: Opened his goalscoring account for the club with a well-taken finish. Found it hard at times in midfield when Everton had extra numbers there, but overall a good display. (7/10)

Ramires: Also got on the scoresheet, breaking into the area before finishing past Howard. Picked up two assists as well, slipping in Ivanovic early on before providing the pass for Matic. (8/10)

Willian: The least effective of Chelsea's trio behind the striker, but still a threat at times. May not have earned himself a start for the next match, though. (7/10)

Cesc Fabregas: Another impressive display from the Spaniard. Didn't quite run the show as he did against Burnley, but still had a large say in how his side performed. Got the assist for the opening goal and laid on a few more through balls over the 90 minutes. (8/10)

Eden Hazard: Forced the Coleman own goal with bright play down the left, beating his man before drilling in a cross that was deflected past Howard. Was relatively quiet other than that considering Chelsea scored six goals, but a good performance nonetheless. (8/10)

Attack

Diego Costa: Two more goals for the summer signing, who now has four in three Premier League games for the club. Took both of them well, and could have had a hat-trick but for a missed chance in the second half. (9/10)

Substitutes

John Obi Mikel: Replaced Willian in the 75th minute and picked up an assist for Chelsea's sixth goal, back-heeling the ball to Costa. (7/10)

Filipe Luis: Brought on with seven minutes remaining to help deal with Coleman and did his job well on his debut. Didn't make much of an impact, but simply made the defensive effort more sturdy. (6/10)

Didier Drogba: Came on for Fabregas with a minute remaining of normal time and didn't have time to do anything apart from give the ball away dangerously once. (6/10)
