Everton manager David Moyes has described the current situation of Rangers as a "tragedy" after the Toffees snapped up Steven Naismith on a free transfer from the Ibrox club.
Naismith refused to transfer his contract to the Rangers newco club, meaning that the striker was available on a free, along with many of his former teammates.
However, despite benefiting from Rangers' decline and being a former Celtic defender, Moyes has bemoaned the situation in which the Glasgow side have found themselves.
"It is a tragedy for Rangers. I'm from the city myself so I know exactly what it means and it is a terrible situation, but it is a situation the players were made aware of and they had to do what they had to do last season," said Moyes.
"Rangers were given the chance to sort out the measures they had to do but the players have to make their decisions - at the moment Rangers are not even sure what league they are going to play in.
"Any player, I would expect, would want to play at the highest level and Steven has executed his right to try to come and play at the highest level and we are delighted to have him."
Moyes spent three years at Celtic at the start of his career, picking up one Scottish Premier League title during his time there.
