Result: Espanyol 4-2 Atletico Madrid

A dominant first-half display has helped Espanyol claim a convincing 4-2 win at home to Atletico Madrid.

The hosts took the lead after six minutes when Joan Verdu smashed in from 20 yards.

The midfielder's evening got better just a minute later when he lashed the ball past goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois again from the edge of the box.

Koffi Romaric made it 3-0 after 18 minutes when he fired in after exchanging passes with Sergio Garcia.

The visitors salvaged some dignity amidst a poor first half display when Falcao headed in.

Espanyol continued to press after the break and were duly rewarded on 52 minutes after Garcia drilled the ball home at the second time of asking.

Despite their dominance, Espanyol were made to sweat in the final 10 minutes after Ardur Turan struck a fine volley in from the edge of the area.

The win has moved Mauricio Pochettino's side up to eighth, while Madrid drop down to 10th.
