Rooney 'in line for recall against Scotland'

Wayne Rooney will return to England's starting lineup for Friday night's World Cup 2018 qualifier against rivals Scotland, according to a report.

The 31-year-old captain has endured a tough time of things this season, having been dropped to the bench by Manchester United recently and also for the Three Lions' goalless draw with Slovenia last time out.

Rooney has shown the odd glimpse of his old form returning over the past week, however, scoring in the Red Devils' 2-1 loss to Fenerbahce and earning an increasingly rare league start against Swansea City last Sunday.

The Mirror claims that interim England manager Gareth Southgate is concerned about Tottenham Hotspur ace Harry Kane's fitness for the derby clash, as he has featured just once in two months for his club and has not taken part in all the training sessions this week.

It is suggested that Rooney, who also scored twice against Scotland in the last meeting between the pair two years ago, will therefore be given the nod to start in attack alongside one of Marcus Rashford, Daniel Sturridge, Jamie Vardy or Theo Walcott.
