Jordan Pickford was the hero as England registered a penalty-shootout win over Switzerland in Sunday's UEFA Nations League third-place playoff.

England had the better of the game in Guimaraes, with Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling both hitting the woodwork and Fabian Schar almost putting through his own net.

However, the Three Lions were able to prevail 6-5 on penalties as Jordan Pickford scored before making the decisive save from Josip Drmic.

Find out how all of the action unfolded in Portugal courtesy of Sports Mole's minute-by-minute updates below.

Hello and welcome to Sports Mole's live coverage of the UEFA Nations League third-place playoff between Switzerland and England. Both nations suffered 3-1 defeats earlier this week - at the hands of Portugal and the Netherlands respectively - but there remains a desire to avoid finishing in last spot. The two teams are making their way out in Guimaraes, so let's see who features in each starting lineup...

SWITZERLAND XI: Sommer; Schar, Akanji, Elvedi; Mbabu, Fernandes, Xhaka, Freuler, Rodriguez; Shaqiri; Seferovic

SWITZERLAND SUBSTITUTES: Moubandje, Lang, Okafor, Steffen, Mvogo, Zuber, Benito, Ajeti, Zakaria, Sow, Drmic, Omlin

ENGLAND XI: Pickford; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Maguire, Rose; Delph, Dier, Alli; Sterling, Kane, Lingard

ENGLAND SUBSTITUTES: Walker, Stones, Henderson, Sancho, Butland, Chilwell, Keane, Rice, Barkley, Rashford, Wilson, Heaton

KICKOFF:  Switzerland get us underway!

OFF THE BAR!  England hit the crossbar within two minutes! Kane gets free inside the penalty area, and decides to try an audacious lob from around 16 yards out. It looks to be heading in, but Sommer gets his finger-tips to the ball to divert it onto the woodwork.

Switzerland have had most of the ball either side of that opportunity. Mbabu got a shot away on the edge of the area, but pressure from Rose meant that it was never threatening the target.

In general, Switzerland do look sharper than England, although it is still early days. England are still intent on playing out from the back.

The last two minutes have passed by without incident. It is probably what England required with Switzerland slowly getting on top.

The playing conditions in Guimaraes are almost perfect. The Sun is out, and the temperature is hovering around the 19C mark. The pace of the game is slow right now, but that isn't due to the weather.

SHOT!  Freuler is able to advance into the penalty area, with the ball sitting up nicely for the volley. However, the midfielder's effort goes straight at Pickford.

England haven't put much together since that early Kane effort. They are pressing Switzerland, but their opponents are doing an effective job in playing the ball out from the back.

CHANCE!  Much better from the Three Lions. Alli and Kane combine to tee up Sterling on the left-hand side of the penalty area, but the winger's first-time shot with his weaker foot is tame and straight at Sommer.

Shaqiri and Seferovic link up well in the final third, and it takes a timely interception from Gomez to prevent a shot on goal.

Delph and Schar both dive into a 50-50 tackle, and it is the Swiss player who comes off the worst. It leads to his team being awarded a free kick, although it is a bit harsh.

We are having another lull in proceedings. It has to be said - the pace of this game is not the best. It's definitely got that end-of-season feel to it.

England have a couple of opportunities to get the ball further forward, but they instead play things back into their own half.

YELLOW CARD!  Rose goes into the book for going in studs first on Mbabu. There's not a lot in it, again, but the yellow card is deserved.

SHOT!  Switzerland work the ball well to create an opening for Xhaka around 30 yards. It is on his weaker foot, however, and a low shot is dragged well wide.

YELLOW CARD!  Lingard follows Rose into the book after going in late on Xhaka. The midfielder's studs made connection with the foot of the Arsenal man.

England put together a patient move which ends with Alexander-Arnold crossing for Sterling, but the winger misses his kick from close range. Had the ball gone into the net, it would have been ruled out for offside.

That attack got the England supporters on their feet, and it needed something like that to add a spark to this game. Both teams have put together the odd burst forward, but that is about it.

Switzerland are happy to sit back once England have the ball. There isn't a whole lot of space for the likes of Sterling and Kane to put anything together.

CHANCE!  England should be ahead. Alexander-Arnold whips in the perfect cross for Alli, who is waiting 10 yards from goal. However, the midfielder can only send a free header over the crossbar.

England have started to take control of this contest now, although it will count for little unless they can find an opening goal. Switzerland have gone into their shell.

A gap opens up in the England backline and it leads to Seferovic having the chance to get a shot away. However, a defender gets back to divert the ball behind for a corner.

Nothing came from that set piece, and England go up the other end to earn their first of the game. It doesn't beat the first man, though.

Mbabu - formerly of Newcastle United - has looked lively down the right flank whenever he has got on the ball, and a run inside ends with Fernandes being given possession. However, he tries to do too much, with Delph there to make the tackle on the edge of the area.

There will be one minute of added-on time.

HALF TIME:  Switzerland 0-0 England

The half-time whistle goes in Guimaraes and we remain on level terms. England have had the better opportunities with Kane, Sterling and Alli all going close, but both teams have only threatened in bursts.

A quick reminder of the two benches...

SWITZERLAND SUBSTITUTES: Moubandje, Lang, Okafor, Steffen, Mvogo, Zuber, Benito, Ajeti, Zakaria, Sow, Drmic, Omlin

ENGLAND SUBSTITUTES: Walker, Stones, Henderson, Sancho, Butland, Chilwell, Keane, Rice, Barkley, Rashford, Wilson, Heaton

KICKOFF:  England get us back underway. No changes for either side.

It has been a relatively slow start to the second half. Freuler had half a chance for Switzerland, but the ball was scuffed towards goal from the edge of the area.

England are being pro-active in their bid to find an opening goal, but the closest which they have come since the restart is through a weak Alexander-Arnold set piece.

It will be interesting to see what changes are made by Southgate. There are a couple of players who are still to play any minutes in Portugal. Callum Wilson will be hoping to make an impact if he is introduced in the final third.

Kane sends a header wide of the post after meeting another fine delivery from Alexander-Arnold, but the forward is adjudged to have pushed the defender.

OFF THE POST!  England hit the woodwork for a second time, but it was from the touch of a Switzerland player. Schar diverted Rose's cross towards his own goal, only for Sommer to make another tremendous save in tipping it onto the far post.

CHANCE!  Switzerland go up the other end and a chance is created for Xhaka. The Arsenal man is waiting 15 yards out, but he fires a first-time effort too close to Pickford, who parries the ball behind for a corner.

You get the impression that neither side want extra time. Both teams are showing a lot more ambition, but we remain goalless for the time being.

SUBSTITUTION! Switzerland make the first change of the match, with Zakaria replacing Fernandes.

Switzerland win a corner on the left, but Rodriguez's delivery is poor and cleared by Gomez. The set pieces from both sides have been disappointing this afternoon.

SUBSTITUTION! Switzerland are being forced into a second alteration due to a calf injury to Shaqiri. Zuber has been brought on in his place.

England are back probing in the Swiss half, but we are going through another lull in this game. The second half has followed the pattern of the first.

SUBSTITUTION! England's first switch sees Walker introduced for Rose.

England create another opening - this time for Sterling - but the winger fails to get a shot away from just inside the area after some fine work from Kane and Alli. That was a chance.

The Three Lions are seeing much more of the ball now, but they still need to do a bit more in the final third. Another change is on the way...

SUBSTITUTION! Wilson is coming on for Kane. It's not a huge surprise given Kane's workload since recovering from an ankle injury.

SHOT!  Zuber is provided with half an opening on the edge of the area, but another effort from the Swiss is scuffed harmlessly wide of the target.

A deep free kick leads to Maguire being found at the back post, but the centre-back can do nothing with his header.

We are into the final 10 minutes now, and I will be honest with you. It looks very much like we are heading to extra time. Neither team are putting much together going forward.

DISALLOWED GOAL!  England have the ball in the net with Wilson converting from close range after Alli hit the crossbar with a header. However, replays show that Wilson pulled Akanji over by the penalty spot. It takes VAR to get involved, but it is the right decision.

For those wondering, it took a couple of minutes for that decision to be reached, so expect plenty of added-on time.

SUBSTITUTION! Switzerland make another change as Drmic replaces the injured Rodriguez.

England win a corner on the left, but the inswinging delivery is cleared by the Swiss defence.

There will be four minutes of added-on time.

England do well to win back possession around 40 yards from goal, which leads to a foul on Wilson. This will probably be the final chance...

Alexander-Arnold's delivery is decent enough, but Switzerland have few issues with clearing the danger.

FULL TIME:  Switzerland 0-0 England

The full-time whistle goes in Guimaraes and we head into extra time after remaining goalless through 90 minutes. It's what no-one wanted, but we are no nearer to discovering who will end the tournament in third place.

KICKOFF:  We are back underway.

Both teams have had flurries forward during the opening stages of extra time, but we are yet to see another chance created. It already feels like we are going to be heading to penalties.

Alexander-Arnold whips in yet another cross with Sterling getting on the end of it at the back post, but the winger somehow heads the ball back towards a defender rather than on goal.

SHOT!  The Liverpool full-back now finds Dier from a corner, but the midfielder heads wide at the near post. It was a difficult chance.

CHANCE!  Another chance for England, this time for Alli. The midfielder sees a header from an inswinging cross superbly kept out by Sommer, who then made a block from Sterling at the near post.

There is every indication that Switzerland are happy to settle for penalties. England are making all of the running now.

We have had a break in play for a couple of minutes due to a Swiss player picking up a knock when blocking a free kick. We are back underway, but England have lost their momentum.

There will be one minute of added-on time.

HALF TIME IN EXTRA TIME:  Switzerland 0-0 England

KICKOFF:  England get us back underway. Southgate had made a further two changes, with Barkley and Sancho replacing Delph and Lingard.

Barkley plays in Alexander-Arnold down the right and the full-back has options in the box. However, his pass is poor, and Wilson can't improvise at the near post.

England are still well on top in this game. The introduction of Barkley and Sancho has lifted the tempo, but the Three Lions still can't find that final pass and goal.

Switzerland have improved over the past couple of minutes. They worked themselves a two-on-one position, but Zakaria failed to provide Seferovic with a shooting opportunity.

SUBSTITUTION! Switzerland make their final change with youngster Okafor coming on for his international debut. Seferovic is the man to make way.

Just the five minutes to go now. We almost deserve penalties having made it through to this stage without seeing a goal.

YELLOW CARD!  Xhaka picks up a yellow card for tripping Sterling on the edge of the area. Chance here.

OFF THE BAR!  Sterling pulls rank and drills a swerving shot off the crossbar. It has been one of those days for the Manchester City man.

Switzerland are back on the ball, and not showing a lot of ambition. We are surely heading to a penalty shootout.

FULL TIME:  Switzerland 0-0 England

Penalties it is. We can that you are not surprised, although England did go agonisingly close on several occasions. Can they win a second shootout in the space of 12 months?

It will be England to take first...

SWITZERLAND *0-1 ENGLAND - MAGUIRE SCORES! Maguire scores, smashing the ball low to Sommer's left.

SWITZERLAND 1-1* ENGLAND - ZUBER SCORES! Switzerland level things up as Zuber finds the top corner. Brilliant penalty.

SWITZERLAND *1-2 ENGLAND - BARKLEY SCORES! Barkley holds his nerve and dinks his effort down the middle.

SWITZERLAND 2-2* ENGLAND - XHAKA SCORES! Switzerland make it 2-2, with Xhaka sending Pickford the wrong way.

SWITZERLAND *2-3 ENGLAND - SANCHO SCORES! Sancho is a surprise taker at three, but he justifies the faith shown in him by finding the bottom corner.

SWITZERLAND 3-3* ENGLAND - AKANJI SCORES! Akanji outfoxes Pickford and sends a fine spot kick into the top corner.

SWITZERLAND *3-4 ENGLAND - STERLING SCORES! It is seven from seven as Sterling powers the ball to Sommer's right.

SWITZERLAND 4-4* ENGLAND - MBABU SCORES! Pickford gets close to this, but Mbabu squeezes the ball to the goalkeeper's right.

SWITZERLAND *4-5 ENGLAND - PICKFORD SCORES! Up steps Pickford, who powers the ball into the corner with Sommer diving the opposite way.

SWITZERLAND 5-5* ENGLAND - SCHAR SCORES! Schar waits for Pickford to move, and sends the ball the other way. It was risky, but it came off.

SWITZERLAND *5-6 ENGLAND - DIER SCORES! When was the last time that England scored six successive penalties in a shootout? Dier fires the ball confidently into the bottom corner.

SWITZERLAND 5-6 ENGLAND - DRMIC MISSES! Drmic stutters on his run-up, and Pickford reads the penalty, diving to his right to make the save.

After all of that, England win another penalty shootout! They deserve it as well.

That will be all from Sports Mole for this game. Thank you for joining us this afternoon, and we hope that you can join us for the final of this competition later today.
