Frank Lampard comes to defence of "brave" Raheem Sterling

Lampard comes to Sterling's defence

Frank Lampard has defended Raheem Sterling amid criticism of the England winger's decision to omit himself from the 1-0 Euro 2016 victory over Estonia.

The Liverpool star, 19, complained of tiredness to Three Lions manager Roy Hodgson and was rested for a match in which Wayne Rooney scored the only goal.

Sterling's commitment and condition at this stage of the season has been questioned, but 106-times capped midfielder Lampard has insisted that it was "brave" of the teenager to be honest about his fitness.

"I actually have lied at times, when I've felt too tired, and carried on playing," he told BBC Radio 5 live. "He could've started again and got injured."

Sterling has made 14 appearances for club and country so far this season, scoring three goals.
