FIFA opens disciplinary proceedings against England and Scotland for wearing black armbands with an image of a poppy displayed on them.

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against England and Scotland after both sets of players wore black armbands with poppies emblazoned on them to commemorate Armistice Day.

The build-up to the Three Lions' 3-0 win over Scotland at Wembley last Friday was dominated by a row over the poppy, which symbolises the country's respect to its war dead.

FIFA rules state that religious, political or commercial symbols must not be displayed on players' kits, but the English and Scottish FAs defied the warning by displaying images of poppies on black armbands worn by the team.

According to The AP, The world governing body has said that it will not "speculate on any outcome or provide an estimated timeline", but it is believed that both FAs face fines.

Wales and Northern Ireland opted against wearing poppies, but they marked the day of remembrance with black armbands.
