Gary Cahill backs Wayne Rooney to smash England records

Gary Cahill says that England teammate Wayne Rooney is bound to break Peter Shilton's appearance record and Sir Bobby Charlton's goal tally for the Three Lions.

Gary Cahill has claimed that Wayne Rooney will finish his international career as England's record cap holder and most prolific goalscorer.

The Manchester United striker is in line to lead the Three Lions into Saturday's Euro 2016 qualifier with Slovenia for what will be his 100th cap, putting him 25 behind legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton.

With 43 international goals, Rooney is also six adrift of all-time top scorer Sir Bobby Charlton, and Cahill says that the 29-year-old is well capable of breaking both records.

"I personally think he can break both, if he keeps in the right frame of mind which he is and he trains hard, he looks after himself," the Chelsea defender told reporters.

"He's reaching 100 caps at the weekend for someone as young as what he is is such an achievement.

"It's a fantastic achievement so I don't see why not and he's a fantastic footballer, so I'm sure he'll be in the set-up for many, many years to come."

The Red Devils skipper has scored three times in eight Premier League outings for United so far this season.
