Hodgson: 'Sterling could fill Sturridge role'

England boss Roy Hodgson has revealed that he could use Raheem Sterling in the number 10 role against Switzerland in their opening Euro 2016 qualifier.

The Three Lions are without Daniel Sturridge due to injury, which will force Hodgson into changing his side from the 1-0 win over Norway last week.

Danny Welbeck was mooted as a replacement for Sturridge, with Wayne Rooney moving to number 10 role, but Hodgson insists that he has other options, including Sterling.

He told reporters: "The fact we haven't raced out to replace people means we think we have enough bodies.

"We used two systems, slightly varied, against Norway. It would be foolish of me to give you an exact appraisal of what we have in our mind, but I think at the moment with the players we are producing in England, the young ones coming forward, they do offer different options.

"They're not stereotyped in their play. Very few are classic number 9s, 10s, 7s, 4s, 6s. They're capable of doing different things. We just want to use them in the best possible way."

England face Switzerland later today in Basel.
