England Women manager Sarina Wiegman tests positive for COVID-19

England Women manager Sarina Wiegman will be absent from the touchline for Friday's Euro 2022 clash with Northern Ireland Women in Group A after testing positive for COVID-19.

The 52-year-old has already led the Lionesses to six points from two games in the tournament, including a record-breaking 8-0 thumping of Norway at the Amex Stadium on Monday night.

England have already booked their place in the quarter-finals after an opening-day 1-0 win over Austria at Old Trafford, but the hosts will have to do without their manager on Friday.

In Wiegman's absence, assistant manager Arjan Veurink will be in charge against Northern Ireland as the former Netherlands head coach recovers at the squad's training base.

"Wiegman will remain in remote contact with the players and technical staff and will be monitored regularly with a view to returning to all elements of her role as soon as possible," a statement from England read.

Wiegman remains unbeaten after 16 games in charge of England - winning 14 of them - and her side will aim to maintain their 100% record in Group A against rock-bottom Northern Ireland at St Mary's Stadium.

England will face the runner-up of Group B in the Women's Euro 2022 quarter-finals, with Spain and Denmark battling it out in Brentford on Saturday for the chance to face the Lionesses.
