Elche edge past Real Sociedad

Elche moved six points clear of the relegation zone in La Liga by beating Real Sociedad 1-0 at the Estadio Martinez Valero this evening.

The hosts took the lead in the 19th minute when Jonathas cut out Markel Bergara's attempted clearance before racing into the box and slotting past Geronimo Rulli.

Xabi Prieto had a chance to level the scores for Sociedad on the half-hour mark, but after being picked out inside the box he placed his effort over the bar.

Sociedad were struggling to create any clear-cut chances and it was the hosts who almost grabbed a second, as Mario Pasalic drilled a strike wide of the target.

It was to be the final decent opening for either side, as Elche held on to claim the points and move up to 14th in the La Liga table.
