Derby County: 'Dave Mackay remembered as a true great of our club'

Derby County chief executive Sam Rush says that Dave Mackay will always be remembered as a "true great" of the club following his death.

Derby County chief executive Sam Rush has paid tribute to Dave Mackay by describing the late footballer as a "true great" of the club.

The Scotland international passed away in Nottingham this week at the age of 80 following a long illness.

Mackay began his career at Hearts before spending nine years playing for Tottenham Hotspur, where he won three FA Cups and eventually became captain.

The Scotsman left Spurs for Derby in 1968 and was named Footballer of the Year the following season, before eventually returning to the Rams as manager five years later and leading them to the league title in 1975.

"Everyone at Derby County is truly saddened at the news that Dave Mackay has passed away," Rush told the club's official website.

"Dave Mackay is a legend at Derby County and his name will forever be etched into the history of the club for the fantastic contribution that he made, both as a player and a manager.

"Fans still talk of his influence to this day and he will be forever remembered as a true great of our Football Club. Our condolences and thoughts go to his family and friends at this time."

Mackay earned 22 caps for his country.
