Chelsea transfer news: Xabi Alonso favourite signs contract until 2032

Chelsea have announced that Pedro Neto has signed a new long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.

During the summer transfer window, the Portugal international was linked with a move to Manchester City and the Saudi Pro League.

However, the market closed without Chelsea's valuation - said to be £100m - being met by any of the alleged interested parties.

In the absence of the injured Marco Palestra, the 26-year-old has been used as a wing-back in Alonso's 3-4-2-1 formation.

After goals against Brighton & Hove Albion and Leeds United, the decision has been taken to hand the attacker a contract extension until 2032.

Neto reacts to new Chelsea contract

Speaking to the club's official website, Neto described the development as an "unbelievable moment".

He said: "It’s an unbelievable moment. From when I arrived, I have always felt like the people here helped me a lot. I feel like home here, I feel like I want to achieve more things here.

"I have had some good moments here as a group and as an individual, and now I want to have more of those moments. I’m really excited because I think we can achieve a lot of things together."

Did Neto deserve a new Chelsea contract?

Neto's form during the second half of 2025-26 infuriated many Chelsea's supporters, who became particularly frustrated with his decision-making that led to red cards, disciplinary issues and missed chances.

However, while Alonso's reign is still in its infancy, Neto looks reborn and has warmed to playing at wing-back when required.

He also has a record at Chelsea of 21 goals and 19 assists from 108 appearances, a respectable return when he has not always started games.

That all said, Alonso will demand that Neto at least finds some consistency with the level of his performances and output.
