Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel opens up on unhappiness over Real Madrid display

Tuchel opens up on unhappiness over Real Madrid display

Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has given an insight into what was discussed with his squad after Wednesday's 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

The European champions were deservedly beaten at Stamford Bridge, the Blues arguably being fortunate to head into next week's reverse fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu trailing by just a two-goal margin.

After the game, Tuchel was critical of his team's performance, and the German revealed to the media on Friday that a detailled debrief had taken place the following day.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Tuchel said: "It was about offensive principles about our game. What we want to do and what we lacked doing. Surprisingly, we lacked structure in the last game. Usually, our big strength is that you can clearly see what we try to do and try to play. This was not the case and it was a big problem.

"We lacked the rhythm and lacked the repetition with our attacks, and we lacked the discipline in our attacking, position discipline in our attacking, and that was a big disadvantage in counter-pressing because we were not in the places where we were supposed to be.

"In defending, we lacked intensity and we lacked investment. That was more or less what we saw and we figured it out in details because it is not about general criticism, it is about details about situations, and it is about trusting in the players. I love the players, I love the group and love to be involved. We can do better together."

Chelsea are currently preparing to face Southampton at St Mary's on Saturday, Tuchel also revealing to reporters that two players had emerged as fitness doubts from the Real fixture.
