John Obi Mikel’s representatives have confirmed that the kidnappers of the midfielder’s father have demanded a “sizeable” ransom.
The 24-year-old was informed of his father’s kidnapping before Chelsea’s goaless draw with Stoke last weekend.
Since then the Blues player has publicly pleaded for the safe return of father, Michael Obi.
The Nigerian’s representatives SEM issued a statement saying: "SEM advises that reports from Nigeria of an £80,000 ransom demand for the return of John Obi Mikel’s father is not true.
"We confirm that Michael Obi has been abducted and that the kidnappers have been in touch with the family and representatives of the family and that discussions for Michael's safe release have begun.
"A sizeable demand has been made but, for security reasons, we are unable to release details of the amount."
The statement went on to confirm that Mikel will be available for selection in Chelsea’s home fixture against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
