Martin Keown: 'Chelsea must make Fernando Torres number one striker at club'

Martin Keown believes that Fernando Torres should be made Chelsea's first-choice striker.

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has stated that Fernando Torres should be made Chelsea's number one striker.

The Spaniard fired the Blues into the lead in last night's Champions League clash against Galatasaray, before the hosts levelled the contest shortly after the hour.

Keown says that Torres's goal is a sign of things to come, and that Jose Mourinho should now stick with the 29-year-old.

"At the start of the season there were glimpses of the Torres of old and Mourinho had him fired up and playing well," Keown said in his Daily Mail column.

"He looks as if he knows he's got his pace back and a key part of Chelsea's success now is to make sure he's their number one. There is always a lot of negativity surrounding Fernando Torres, but Chelsea have to stick with him.

"He took his goal terrifically well, opening up his body to pass the ball in with his foot at an extraordinary angle. When you saw that technique, you wondered if Torres might fluff his lines, but he did well to squeeze it between the two bodies trying to block the ball."

Torres has scored nine times for the Stamford Bridge club this season in all competitions.
