Phil Jagielka: 'Chelsea pursuit is a test of character for John Stones'

Everton captain Phil Jagielka says that Chelsea's pursuit of John Stones is a "test of character" for the defender.

Everton captain Phil Jagielka has insisted that teammate John Stones is dealing with Chelsea's interest "really well", but how he handle's the situation is a "test of character".

The Premier League champions have been publicly pursuing the England international, but Everton have held firm by reportedly rejecting two bids for the defender.

Despite manager Roberto Martinez claiming last week that Stones's head has been turned, the 21-year-old played a full 90 minutes in the Toffees' opening game of the season on Saturday, which resulted in a 2-2 draw with Watford.

"It's not an easy scenario, it is difficult for John," The Express quotes Jagielka as saying. "He is dealing with it really well. I have told him to just keep doing what he does because there is a reason why people want to sign him. It is a little bit of test for him now.

"It is a test of character and we all know he has a good character. He is a level-headed lad. It is easy for people to let it go to their heads or decide not to be totally committed, but if you look at his performance, then he is a good lad and these little tests in his career will make him stronger."

Reports have claimed that Everton will allow Stones to leave Goodison Park if Chelsea meet the club's £34m valuation.
