Chelsea ease past Swindon Town

Two goals in five first-half minutes set Chelsea on their way to the fourth round of the League Cup after beating Swindon Town on Tuesday.

Swindon Town start gamely as they looked to compete with their Premier League peers and limited their opponents to few chances in the first quarter of the match.

David Luiz went close early on with an audacious free kick that Robins keeper Wes Foderingham needed to be equal to.

Fernando Torres, finally put the West London outfit in front after Juan Mata's shot was tipped away by Foderingham and the Spanish striker was alert enough to latch on to the rebound and score from a tight angle.

Torres turned provided minutes later to supply substitute Ramires, who was introduced earlier in the first half for the injured Marco van Ginkel, who cleverly lifted the ball over the Swindon keeper to double Chelsea's lead.

The Robins almost pulled a goal back after the interval when Nathan Thompson put the ball in the net only for the linesman to flag for offside as the hosts showed some resistance.

Willian had a chance to score his first goal for Chelsea when he was fed by Luiz, but his shot went wide of the post when a pass to Torres in space seemed a better option.

The win was somewhat overshadowed by injuries to van Ginkel and his replacement Ramires, who himself was substituted at half time.

Chelsea face the prospect of a reunion with former manager Andre Villas Boas as they travel to Tottenham on Saturday.
