Chelsea team news: Injury, suspension list vs. Barnsley

Sports Mole previews Chelsea's injury and suspension news ahead of their EFL Cup third-round tie with Barnsley on Wednesday evening.

Chelsea will be aiming to regain some confidence when they welcome Championship side Barnsley to Stamford Bridge for Wednesday's EFL Cup third-round clash.

The Blues began their Premier League season with a 3-1 win against Brighton & Hove Albion, but Frank Lampard soon witnessed his side be put to the sword by champions Liverpool upon their return to familiar territory at the weekend.

As Chelsea gear up for their first cup game of the new campaign, Lampard will no doubt be hoping to record a convincing victory over Barnsley as the Blues look to build up some momentum heading into the winter months.

However, the Blues manager was still without a number of players against Liverpool, and here, Sports Mole rounds up Chelsea's latest injury and suspension news ahead of the midweek showdown with Barnsley.

Ben Chilwell

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Ankle
Possible return date: September 23 (vs. Barnsley)

Ben Chilwell is yet to make his debut for the Blues since arriving in a big-money move from Leicester City. The left-back is nursing an ankle injury but is heading in the right direction, Lampard confirmed, and Chilwell will be in the squad for Barnsley.

Christian Pulisic

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Hamstring
Possible return date: September 26 (vs. West Brom)

Christian Pulisic has seen his return to action delayed after suffering from discomfort, and the American was not involved against Brighton or Liverpool. Lampard is not expected to take any unnecessary risks over Pulisic's fitness and the winger is set to miss out again here.

Hakim Ziyech

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: September 26 (vs. West Brom)

As is the case with Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech is also yet to make his competitive debut for the Blues after picking up a knock in a pre-season friendly against Brighton. The former Ajax man will play no part in midweek but could very well come back for Chelsea's next league fixture against West Bromwich Albion.

Thiago Silva

Status: Minor doubt
Type of injury: Lack of fitness
Possible return date: September 23 (vs. Barnsley)

Veteran defender Thiago Silva is working his way back to fitness but was forced to miss out the defeat to Liverpool. The Brazil international is said to be training well and Lampard has confirmed the centre-back will be in the squad, so Silva has an outside chance of getting some minutes on the board this week.

Billy Gilmour

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Teenage protege Billy Gilmour has been sidelined since the summer with a knee injury, which he has since had an operation on. The 19-year-old will remain on the treatment table until October at the very least.

CHELSEA'S SUSPENSION LIST

Andreas Christensen

Possible return date: September 26 (vs. West Brom)

Andreas Christensen was sent off for hauling down Liverpool's Sadio Mane after a VAR review when the winger was through on goal at the weekend. As a result, the defender is set to serve a one-match suspension and will play no part in midweek.
