Charlton Athletic boss Chris Powell delighted to be party pooper in Sheffield

Charlton Athletic boss Chris Powell says that constant talk of a potential Steel City derby spurred his side on during Monday's 2-1 FA Cup win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Charlton Athletic boss Chris Powell has claimed that constant talk of a potential Steel City derby spurred his side on during Monday's 2-1 FA Cup win at Sheffield Wednesday.

Victory for Wednesday would have seen them book a quarter-final date with local rivals Sheffield United, but the Blades will instead host Charlton, after goals from Callum Harriott and Dorian Dervite secured a famous win for the Addicks.

"Everyone was talking about a potential Sheffield derby and I don't think I will be coming back to Sheffield too often," joked Powell, who celebrated the win by sprinting to the away end and swinging from the crossbar.

"We just felt that was enough motivation for us tonight. The players were excellent in an attacking sense. The first 20-25 minutes we were very good and deserved the lead.

"We knew we would be on the back foot in the second half. Wednesday got the goal, but we came up with a winner. My keeper made some real quality saves towards the end and we find ourselves in the last eight. It's excellent for us and I'm really, really pleased."

Charlton's last quarter-final appearance ended in a 1-0 home defeat to Wycombe Wanderers in the League Cup in 2006.
