A goal by Nicolas Lombaerts in first-half stoppage time was enough for Zenit St Petersburg to claim all three points against Shakhtar Donetsk this evening.
Igor Denisov went close to putting Zenit in front mid-way through the opening half, but his effort was saved by Oleksandr Rybka.
Lombaerts ensured that they would take the lead going into the break when he headed in Viktor Fayzulin's corner.
Veteran full-back Darijo Srna had Shakhtar's best chance to grab his side a share of the spoils, but he dragged his effort wide of goal.
Zenit now top Group G.
