UEFA 'set to back summer Champions League'

UEFA is reportedly ready to support the creation of a new Champions League style tournament.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding how the ongoing domestic and European competitions will be completed during the coronavirus outbreak, talks have been ongoing regarding an addition to the schedule.

According to the Daily Mail, UEFA wants to introduce a new tournament to compete with FIFA's Club World Cup.

The report suggests that the proposed competition is being backed by Relevant Sports, the promoters of the International Champions Cup which is staged during pre-season.

A number of Premier League clubs are said to be in support of the idea, with teams earning entry into the event through their domestic league positions.

As it stands, Relevant want to stage the inaugural competition in 2021.
