Cardiff City's Aron Gunnarsson undergoes knee surgery

Cardiff City midfielder Aron Gunnarsson has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to knee surgery.

The Iceland international limped off during the early stages of Cardiff's 2-0 win over Hull City on Saturday.

Gunnarsson, who joined Cardiff from Coventry City in 2011, rejected a new contract at the Championship club in November, with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.

"We can confirm that [Gunnarsson] has today undergone surgery to remove a small amount of floating knee cartilage," the Bluebirds wrote in a statement on their website.

"It is anticipated that Aron will be sidelined for a number of weeks, although fears of a more serious injury have thankfully been allayed. We wish Aron the speediest of recoveries."

The 29-year-old will be fighting to regain fitness for his country's first ever World Cup game against Argentina on June 16.
