Brentford to start work on 'Premier League standard' stadium next month

Brentford are reportedly aiming to begin work on their new stadium next month after being granted updated planning permission by Hounslow Borough Council.

The Bees are planning to move to a new ground at Lionel Road late next year which will meet the requirements of the Premier League in the event of their promotion to the top flight, reports the Evening Standard.

"Site preparation works are progressing well and the project is on schedule to commence the next stage of construction in line with a stadium completion date in late 2019," read a club statement.

Although the new ground's capacity of 17,250 is almost 3,000 less than their current home Griffin Park, it will include expanded outside broadcast space as well as upgraded media, broadcast and lighting capabilities, in line with Premier League requirements.

Brentford, who are currently 11th in the Championship, eight points away from the playoff places, are expected to share their new ground with rugby union side London Irish.
