Clubs in the Premier League and Football League will no longer carry advertising for short-term lender Wonga on their websites.
The news comes after a football fans' campaign, led by Northampton Town supporter Bob Ward, called for clubs to stop hosting ads for the company, which charges 4,214% APR on short-term online loans.
More than 80 clubs' websites operate use a platform that carries advertising negotiated by the league through an internet subsidiary.
Last season, this platform's advertising included the promotion of Wonga's loans, however that specific contract has now expired and will not be renewed.
A league spokesman said: "The Football League's website advertising agreement with Wonga.com concluded at the end of the 2011-12 football season.
"It is not currently envisaged that this agreement will be extended."
It is understood that Championship side Blackpool, whose primary kit sponsor is Wonga, will continue to honour their own contract with the firm.
