Jerome Boateng: 'Defeat to Wolfsburg is a wake-up call'

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng believes that the team's 4-1 defeat away to Wolfsburg should act as a "wake-up call".

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng has described Friday's 4-1 defeat by Wolfsburg as a "wake-up call" for the team.

The Bundesliga champions saw their unbeaten start to the season ended at the Volkswagen Arena last night with a heavy loss to their title rivals.

Boateng has now called on his teammates to get their act together ahead of Tuesday's visit of Schalke 04.

"It's simple - we played really badly," he told ESPN. "It might be good that it's happened to us today because it's a wake-up call.

"We can't afford another performance like that. We weren't aggressive and gave away possession far too easily. We have to take a good, long look at ourselves. We all know we'll need a vast improvement against Schalke if we're to make amends for this."

Bayern's previous defeat in the Bundesliga came against rivals Borussia Dortmund last April.
