Edgar Davids allocated number one shirt at Barnet

Davids allocated number one shirt

Barnet player-manager Edgar Davids has broken with footballing tradition by allocating himself the number one jersey for the forthcoming season.

One is a number that is almost exclusively worn by goalkeepers, but 40-year-old midfielder Davids plans to change that.

After wearing one during the Bees' 4-1 friendly loss to MK Dons on Saturday, Davids told the Barnet Times: "That is my number for the season. I am going to start this trend."

First-choice goalkeeper Graham Stack, who will wear 29 on his jersey, added: "Squad numbers mean nothing to me and I've had a few over the years. So it is not an issue for me.

"Edgar Davids has asked to wear number one, he asked me what number I want and I said I didn't mind."

Barnet, who were relegated from the Football League last season, begin life in the Conference Premier with a home game against Chester on Saturday, August 10.
