Atletico Madrid draw with Barcelona to clinch historic La Liga title

Atletico clinch La Liga title

Atletico Madrid have broken the 10-year La Liga duopoly of Barcelona and Real Madrid by drawing with Barcelona on the final day to clinch the title.

Atleti had to avoid defeat at the Camp Nou today and managed a 1-1 draw despite early injuries to key players.

Diego Simeone's afternoon couldn't have begun much worse as first Diego Costa, then Arda Turan had to be substituted.

The pair both broke down in tears after coming off and look likely to now miss next weekend's Champions League final against city rivals Real Madrid.

Barca took the lead in the 34th minute when Alexis Sanchez unleashed a vicious strike from a tight angle that flew past Thibaut Courtois and into the net off the underside of the crossbar.

Atletico were within inches of levelling the match moments after half time when former Barca player David Villa spun in the box and curled an effort off the foot of the post.

The visitors wouldn't have to wait long for an equaliser though as Diego Godin drew them level in the 50th minute with a bullet header from Gabi's corner.

Barca thought that they had retaken the lead 15 minutes later, but Lionel Messi was adjudged to have been offside when he swiped home in the area.

The home side were camped in Atletico's half and with nearly 100,000 supporters willing them on, they had late chances to snatch the title.

They couldn't find a way through though so the title goes to Atletico - their first for 18 years. Barca miss out on a fifth title in six seasons.
