Lionel Messi wants 'injury-free 2014'

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi targets an 'injury-free 2014'.

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is hopeful that he will not suffer any injuries in 2014 as he nears a return to action.

The Argentine has not played for his club since suffering a serious thigh injury against Real Betis in November, but is expected to return to first-team training next week.

"There are many important things personally, but on a sporting level in 2014 I hope to have a year without injuries," Messi told Mundo Leo.

"The aim now is to prepare physically and the idea is to have a couple of sessions with my teammates before playing again.

"After I celebrate the New Year with my family, I will fly out to Barcelona on Wednesday January 1 and, once I have returned, we will see when I am good to play again."

Barcelona return to La Liga action against Elche at the weekend.
