Luis Enrique doubts need for Spanish Super Cup

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique says that it 'did not make sense' for the Spanish Super Cup to be played this season after his club won the domestic double last term.

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has claimed that it 'did not make sense' for the Spanish Super Cup to be played this season after his club won the domestic double last season.

Much like the Community Shield in England, the Spanish Super Cup is, on paper, a clash between the winners of the league and the domestic cup during the previous campaign.

Barcelona won both trophies last season and as a result, Sevilla, who made the final of the Copa del Rey, were given the chance to win the Super Cup at the expense of the Spanish champions over two legs.

Enrique's side ran out 5-0 aggregate winners courtesy of a 3-0 victory at Camp Nou on Wednesday, but the Spanish coach has questioned the need for the competition when one club has won both domestic trophies.

"We all like trophies, as the intensity of the players demonstrates. I don't really understand why the Supercopa was held. When there is one winner of La Liga and the Copa del Rey it makes no sense to play the Supercopa. Clearly there is 'business' but for me it doesn't make sense," AS quotes Enrique as saying.

Barcelona will open their La Liga title defence at home to Real Betis this weekend.
