Gabi signs new Atletico Madrid deal

Atletico Madrid midfielder Gabi signs a new one-year contract at the Vicente Calderon, which will run until the summer of 2018.

Atletico Madrid captain Gabi has extended his contract at the Vicente Calderon until the summer of 2018.

The 33-year-old is currently in his second spell at Atletico, having initially departed the capital club to join Real Zaragoza in 2007, before returning in the summer of 2011.

Gabi has made over 250 appearances for Atletico since returning to Madrid, and the midfielder has revealed his delight at penning a new deal ahead of his club's move to a new stadium next summer.

"It's a great challenge to be able to be in the team when we move to the new stadium," Gabi told reporters. "A new and exciting stage starts for the club and being the captain of the first team in a moment that will go down in history is a source of pride for me.

"I am very happy to continue one more year at home. I always say that playing with Atletico de Madrid was my childhood dream, so I cannot ask for more than what I am living these years. I also want to thank the fans for their unconditional support both for me and for the team."

Gabi has won the La Liga title, the Europa League and one Copa del Rey during his time at the Vicente Calderon, in addition to picking up two runners-up medals in the Champions League.
