The agent of Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has responded to speculation linking his client with a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window.
Alvarez joined Atletico from Manchester City in August 2024 for a reported £82m, penning a six-year contract, and he enjoyed an impressive debut campaign at the club in front of goal.
The Argentina international scored a team-high 29 goals in 57 games across all competitions in the 2024-25 season as Atleti finished third in La Liga, reached the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey and were eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Earlier this summer, it was claimed that reigning Premier League champions Liverpool weighed up a big-money move for Alvarez before turning their attention to other targets.
However, Alvarez’s agent Fernando Hidalgo has played down such speculation and claims that Arne Slot’s side have never pursued his client.
Alvarez not for sale as agent dismisses Liverpool transfer talk
Speaking to Erem News, as quoted by The Mirror, Hidalgo said: "There were no official offers from Liverpool to sign Julian last season, and everything that has been said in this regard is false.
"Last summer there were no offers because Atletico de Madrid didn't want to sell the player, so negotiations didn't take place."
This comes after Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo emphatically stated earlier this summer that Alvarez is content at the Metropolitano Stadium and ruled out a sale in the near future.
"Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid. He's very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player. He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid,” Cerezo told reporters.
Alvarez to Liverpool dead and buried as Slot has firepower of Isak and Ekitike
While many Liverpool fans might have welcomed the possibility of Alvarez moving to Anfield, they are excited to see how summer signings Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike will perform for Slot’s side.
Isak completed a British-record £125m transfer to Liverpool from Newcastle United on deadline day and was handed his full debut in Wednesday’s 3-2 Champions League win over Atletico Madrid at Anfield.
The 25-year-old, who is still building up his match fitness, was withdrawn in the 58th minute after a bright yet goalless debut and was replaced by Ekitike, who has made a positive start to life on Merseyside.
Ekitike, a £79m signing from Eintracht Frankfurt, scored three goals and provided one assist across his opening three games for Liverpool in all competitions, netting in his opening two Premier League appearances against Bournemouth and Newcastle to help the Reds win both matches.
Slot must now weigh up how he can get the best out of both strikers and whether he can play them both in the same team along with fellow attacking stars Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo.
