Diego Simeone delighted with "exceptional" Atletico Madrid

Diego Simeone has claimed that his Atletico Madrid side were "exceptional" as they started their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Galatasaray.

Antoine Griezmann netted twice in the first half to hand Atletico the control in Turkey, and the 2014 finalists defended impressively to secure all three points at the home of their Group C rivals.

"We played remarkable football in the first half, we were exceptional," Simeone told reporters.

"We nearly threw it away at the end [of the first half], because we were poor in our work-rate at that time. But in the second half, we played according to the score and we controlled it well."

Atletico return to action with a trip to Eibar on Saturday.
