Transfer news and rumours today: Aston Villa suffer Ezri Konsa replacement blow, Joao Palhinha agrees exit, Burnley land Feyenoord star

Emery's Konsa replacement: Latest transfer news and rumours today

Aston Villa have reportedly suffered a setback in their pursuit of defensive reinforcements after seeing an initial £18m offer rejected for Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

Unai Emery is currently scouring the market for a reliable central defender after Ezri Konsa's lucrative £55m move to Arsenal.

Villa are said to have identified Harwood-Bellis, 24, as a primary target to fill the impending void at the heart of their backline.

According to The Athletic, the South Coast club firmly dismissed the opening proposal from Villa as it fell significantly below their overall valuation of the player.

Southampton are understood to value the England international closer to £30m after paying Manchester City around £20m to secure his signature on a permanent basis.

Harwood-Bellis still has two years remaining on his current contract at St Mary's and has already featured in both of their opening competitive fixtures this season.

While Harwood-Bellis represents an attractive homegrown option with immense potential, his hefty price tag could force the Villa hierarchy to consider more cost-effective alternatives.

Reports suggest AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori and Chelsea defender Tosin Adarabioyo are also being closely monitored as potential candidates to bolster the defensive ranks if a move for the ex-Man City man is unsuccessful.

Benfica agree £12m deal for combative Premier League midfield star

Joao Palhinha has reportedly moved one step closer to ending his turbulent spell in Germany by reaching a verbal agreement to join Benfica this summer.

The 31-year-old midfielder originally joined Bayern Munich from Fulham for a substantial fee in 2024 but severely struggled to establish himself as a regular starter at the Allianz Arena.

The midfield star's lack of consistent playing time ultimately led to a mixed loan spell with Tottenham Hotspur during the 2025-26 campaign, which was always unlikely to yield a permanent move.

A highly anticipated return to the Premier League with Aston Villa initially appeared likely but those negotiations have now completely collapsed in favour of a switch to Portugal.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Benfica and Bayern have successfully struck a verbal agreement worth an initial €14m (£12m) plus a maximum of €5m (£4.2m) in performance-related add-ons.

Official documents are now expected to be exchanged between the respective hierarchies after Palhinha reportedly personally issued the green light.

Romano reports that Benfica president Rui Costa has reportedly been instrumental in driving the complex negotiations to bring the experienced international back to his homeland.

The defensive midfielder is widely expected to put pen to paper on a four-year contract that will securely tie him to Lisbon until the summer of 2030.

Burnley sign Eredivisie star to aid promotion bid

Burnley have officially announced the permanent signing of centre-back Anel Ahmedhodzic from Eredivisie outfit Feyenoord for an undisclosed fee.

The 27-year-old defender has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Turf Moor to return to English football after a single season in the Netherlands.

Reports suggest that the Clarets have paid a €7m (£6m) fee to secure the Bosnia and Herzegovina international and heavily bolster their central defence.

Ahmedhodzic arrives with a wealth of Championship experience after previously helping Sheffield United achieve promotion to the Premier League in 2023.

The defender's arrival comes at an opportune moment for Burnley as they look to build momentum following a 2-2 draw in their opening league fixture against West Ham United.

Ahmedhodzic revealed that he was delighted to sign for the Clarets and cited the impressive atmosphere at Turf Moor from his previous visits as an opposition player.

The centre-back also acknowledged his prior knowledge of the Championship while confidently stating that he intends to use his accumulated experience to help guide the team towards their goals.
