Paul Lambert: 'Still plenty of Premier League games to go'

Paul Lambert insists that merely surviving relegation this season is not the aim for Aston Villa and instead hopes to see his side climb up the Premier League table.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert remains confident that his side can climb up the Premier League table if they can replicate their performance against Chelsea this afternoon.

The Villans ended their 11-hour barren run in front of goal courtesy of Jores Okore's back-post header against the league leaders, which cancelled out Eden Hazard's earlier opener at Villa Park.

However, all off the home side's hard work was undone when Branislav Ivanovic struck to earn a 2-1 victory for the Blues and ensure that Villa remain in a relegation fight at the wrong end of the table.

Speaking to reporters after the game, an upbeat Lambert said: "I thought the performance was very good. We want to go into a run of games where if we play like that hopefully we will pick up points.

"It's not just about 17th, you want to go as high as you can. There are a lot of games still to go and if we do that in the coming weeks then we'll pick up points. That's a catalyst for the football club to go and pick up points."

Villa, currently 16th in the table and just two point above the drop zone, return to action on Tuesday night when they face Hull City.
