Aston Villa vs. Liverpool: Unai Emery's side looking to end 21-year streak in Premier League fixture

Villa looking to end 21-year streak in Liverpool Premier League fixture

Aston Villa will be bidding to end a 21-year streak when they play host to Liverpool on Wednesday night.

The West Midlands outfit head into their showdown with the Premier League leaders having prevailed from just three of their last 10 league fixtures.

As a result, Unai Emery's side sit down in ninth position in the standings, six points adrift of fourth-placed Manchester City.

Villa now face the challenge of hosting Liverpool and Chelsea in the space of three days at a time when there are a number of injury doubts for Emery to contend with.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard will also be hoping to end Villa's dire record in encounters against the Merseyside giants in the Premier League.

What streak can Villa end?

Last season, this corresponding fixture took place in the middle of May, a chaotic match ending 3-3 courtesy of two late goals from Jhon Duran.

If Villa are able to avoid defeat on Wednesday night, it would represent the first time since 2004 that they have not suffered consecutive losses to Liverpool in the league.

Villa's overall recent record against Liverpool is abysmal, however, with just one victory and two draws coming from their last 14 such contests.

Furthermore, Liverpool have scored at least twice in each of their last seven Premier League fixtures at Villa Park, netting 20 times in total.

The biggest positive for Villa is they are currently on a 12-match unbeaten streak at home in top-flight fixtures, not losing since defeat to Arsenal in August.

How do Liverpool match up?

That said, Liverpool make the trip to Birmingham as the only side to remain undefeated in away Premier League contests during 2024-25, winning nine times and posting four draws.

Arne Slot now holds the record for the longest such streak in the Premier League having taken over a club. Coincidentally, former Aston Villa manager John Gregory held the previous record with 12 games.

Much was made of Liverpool labouring to a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the weekend, but they have the chance to move 10 points clear at the top.
