Roberto Martinez responds to claims that Wigan's pitch was to blame for Darren Bent's ankle injury.

Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has dismissed claims that the DW Stadium pitch was to blame for Darren Bent's injury last weekend.

The Aston Villa striker suffered an ankle injury during the goalless draw and members of the Villa contingent have claimed that the pitch was to blame.

Martinez said: "It is cheap to say the pitch was the reason for the injury.

"It was not an injury caused by the pitch. His ankle got caught under his body and that was the problem."

Bent is now at risk of missing out on Euro 2012.
