Mikel Arteta rules out Smith Rowe Arsenal exit

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has emphatically denied suggestions that Emile Smith Rowe could leave the club this summer.

The Englishman scored the Gunners' first goal of pre-season against Hibernian on Tuesday night, but his 82nd-minute strike was not enough to prevent Arsenal losing 2-1 at Easter Road.

Smith Rowe's breakthrough was a key factor in Arsenal's mid-season turnaround during the 2020-21 campaign, and Aston Villa are thought to be pressing hard for his signature, despite having two bids knocked back.

However, Arteta played down suggestions of a summer exit post-match, telling reporters: "Without a question. Yes. He will stay here, 100%."

When asked about rumoured bids from Aston Villa - who have already beaten Arsenal to the signature of Emiliano Buendia - Arteta replied: "No comment."

Smith Rowe ended the 2020-21 season with four goals and eight assists to his name in all competitions, and he is thought to be close to penning a new five-year deal in North London.

Joe Willock was also nowhere to be seen against Hibs amid links with a return to Newcastle United, but Arteta revealed that the midfielder missed out due to a minor groin injury.
