Manchester City and Arsenal are keen to sign £53m-rated Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy this summer, according to a report.

Manchester City and Arsenal are reportedly preparing to compete for the signature of Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy during this summer's transfer window.

The 27-year-old made the move to Bernabeu from Lyon in 2019, and he has represented Los Blancos on 130 occasions in all competitions, contributing five goals and 10 assists in the process.

Mendy has won two La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups, the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup during a successful period in the Spanish capital.

However, the France international has been restricted to just 25 appearances in all competitions this season due to injury problems.

Mendy has only just returned from a muscular problem, featuring as a second-half substitute in Real Madrid's 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in La Liga before the international break.

However, the left-back is now facing a month on the sidelines with a calf issue that he picked up during a training session with his Spanish club.

Mendy has another two years left to run on his contract, but there has been speculation surrounding his future over the last few months.

According to Fichajes, both Man City and Arsenal are interested in signing the defender this summer, and the Premier League duo would be prepared to pay in the region of €60m (£53m) for his signature.

The report claims that Real Madrid are willing to sell the Frenchman, viewing him as a player capable of raising a healthy transfer fee in the summer market.

David Alaba and Nacho are both options for Real Madrid at left-back, while it is understood that Fran Garcia will be returning to Bernabeu this summer from Rayo Vallecano.

Garcia came through the youth system at Bernabeu but largely represented their B side between 2018 and 2020, only making one first-team appearance before leaving for Rayo.

The 23-year-old has been in strong form for Andoni Iraola's side this term, though, providing two assists in 28 appearances in all competitions.

Real Madrid will reportedly trigger a buy-back clause of €10m (£8.9m), but they will actually only need to pay €5m (£4.5m) due to a 50% sell-on clause.

As a result, Mendy will allegedly be allowed to leave the Spanish and European champions this summer, and there have also been claims that Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on the situation.
