How Arsenal could line up against Manchester City

Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for Wednesday's rearranged Premier League match against Manchester City at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will return to the Etihad Stadium to face Manchester City for the first time since leaving when he comes up against his former mentor Pep Guardiola on Wednesday evening.

The Gunners go into the game enjoying the longest current unbeaten run in the Premier League, having not yet suffered a top-flight defeat in 2020.

However, they have a torrid recent record against Manchester City and have also only won one of their last 12 away league games, leaving them as major underdogs on their trip to the home of the champions.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the visitors could line up for the contest.

Arsenal have been boosted by the returns of defensive trio Kieran Tierney, Cedric Soares and Shkodran Mustafi to training recently, although of those only the latter is likely to feature on Wednesday night.

Tierney and Cedric must both build up their fitness levels first, whereas Mustafi has only missed two games with his thigh problem and should be ready to come straight back into the starting lineup in place of Pablo Mari.

Fellow defenders Sead Kolasinac and Calum Chambers remain longer-term absentees, and they have been joined in the treatment room by Lucas Torreira, who could miss the remainder of the campaign with a fractured ankle.

Arteta has an interesting decision to make in attack, where Eddie Nketiah has been preferred to Alexandre Lacazette recently, although the Frenchman's winner against West Ham could be enough to earn him a starting role.

That said, Lacazette has scored an unparalleled four goals off the bench since the start of last season and, while he will not want to be labelled a super-sub, his effectiveness as a replacement could see Arteta hold him in reserve.

The Arsenal lineup could also depend on how brave Arteta is feeling; Mesut Ozil has often been left out of such big games due to questions over his workrate, while Nicolas Pepe and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang would be expected to carry out plenty of defensive duties should they be selected.

Matteo Guendouzi is likely to come into the side in order to make the midfield more robust, while Hector Bellerin's superior agility compared to Sokratis Papastathopoulos could earn him the nod against Man City's tricky wingers.
