Arsene Wenger bemoans penalty decision

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger "regrets" the penalty decision that his side had turned down during Saturday's 1-1 draw at Stoke.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was unhappy that his side were not awarded a penalty during their 1-1 draw at Stoke City.

Peter Crouch gave the Potters an early lead at the Britannia Stadium before Robin van Persie drew the Gunners level soon after.

However, Wenger believed that his side were unfairly denied a spot kick in the second half when Glen Whelan looked to have fouled Yossi Benayoun.

"It was basically a fair result overall but there's still regret on the penalty that was not given for us," he told Sky Sports News.

"I still don't expect to understand why it wasn't given but we have to cope with it and in the end we got a point. We cannot change anything now, anyway."

Despite the disappointment of that decision, the Frenchman remained pleased with his side's performance.

"We showed great spirit today and we made a point," he added. "For us it was important not to forget to play our game and we did it.

"We've got great character. I must give credit to the players because Stoke were really up for it. They gave us a cup game today."

The point has kept Arsenal third in the Premier League table.
