England manager Gareth Southgate hails Arsenal youngster Emile Smith Rowe, claiming that the 21-year-old's quality is "apparent" as he eyes his senior debut.

England manager Gareth Southgate has claimed that Emile Smith Rowe's quality is "apparent" after overseeing the Arsenal youngster in training.

The 21-year-old was initially due to link up with the Under-21s before being called up to the senior team after Marcus Rashford and James Ward-Prowse's withdrawals.

Smith Rowe will be eyeing his debut for England against either Albania or San Marino in World Cup 2022 Qualifying, and Southgate has been pleased to see the Arsenal man settle in quickly.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference, Southgate said: "We have brought him to be involved with the team in the two matches. He has settled really well.

"He obviously knows a couple of his club teammates and Phil [Foden] from the Under-17s. This is a group that makes new players very welcome so it's not a difficult environment to settle in and his quality has been apparent from the way he has trained."

The Three Lions boss also provided an update on Mason Mount and Luke Shaw, with both men yet to link up with the team following dental surgery and concussion respectively.
