Preview: Anderlecht vs. Borussia Dortmund

Anderlecht vs. Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund will hope that the Champions League can provide a winning respite on Wednesday when they travel to Anderlecht in Group D after a stuttering run of form in the Bundesliga.

Since convincingly beating Premier League side Arsenal on matchday one in Europe earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp's side have lost two and drawn one in the German top flight.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Schalke 04 saw them drop to 12th in the table and they are already seven points adrift of pacesetters Bayern Munich.

Klopp's squad has been hampered by injury and he will still be unable to call upon the likes of Marco Reus, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Nuri Sahin tomorrow night.

Centre-back Mats Hummels made his return from injury against Schalke, but is unlikely to start again in Brussels.

Victory at the Stade Constant Vanden Stock would put BVB in an excellent position in the group on six points and they will hope not to be the first German side to lose against Belgian opposition in the Champions League.

As for hosts Anderlecht, they go into the match top of the Belgian Pro League with 21 points from nine games.

In fact, Besnik Hasi's men are yet to suffer defeat in any competition this season, opening up their Champions League campaign with an impressive 1-1 draw at Galatasaray.

They were on course to shock the Turkish side until an injury-time equaliser arrived from Burak Yilmaz.

Number one Silvio Proto is set to return from suspension and replace Davy Roef between the sticks, while 17-year-old Youri Tielemans, who was the youngest player in any Champions League team on matchday one, could again start in midfield.

If the Purple and White do cause an upset, it will end a run of nine games without a win in European competition.

Dortmund's only previous away trip to Anderlecht came in the 1990-91 UEFA Cup when the Belgian side came out on top 1-0.
