Mike Hussey top-scored with 66 and Eoin Morgan contributed 31 to help the Thunder to 155/6 after winning the toss.
However, that total proved to be insufficient as Matthew Wade's 44 helped to build a platform for Brad Hodge, who set up an impressive victory by hitting 64 off 36 balls.
David Hussey, who finished the match not out on 16, completed the win with five deliveries to spare to maintain the Stars' unbeaten start in Big Bash Three.
